The current world record for "free distance" hang gliding as of 2005
435.3 Miles

held by Manfred Ruhmer with in 2001, but Mike Barber has flown an uncertified distance of 704 km (437 Miles) on June 19 2002 in Zapata Texas.

Spectacular Facts and Trivia

  • Billy Vaughn finally won the Spectacular advanced division in 2007 after coming in 2nd 6 or 7 times.

  • The only two pilots to thermal a hang glider out of Jockey's Ridge were both winners of the Hang Gliding Spectacular: Jim Johns 1987 Winner and Bo Hagewood 2002 Winner. (All winners)
     

  • As of 2003 there is a tie for the most Spectacular wins between Steve Wendt (4 wins) and Ken Brown (4 wins). Steve won in 1986, 1989, 1990, 1991 and Ken won in 1993, 1994, 1995, 1998.
